Susan's Review of From Rags to Kisses-by Shana Galen--Survivors Series #11

She’s poor as a church mouse.

When young Jenny Tate stumbles over the beaten body of a boy in the streets of the London slums, her only intention is to rifle through his pockets. But the bruised lad charms her into helping him, and the next thing she knows, Aidan Sterling and she are fast friends, navigating life on the streets with all its dangers together. Jenny has learned never to trust or love anyone, but as the two grow up, they learn to rely on other. And then Aidan betrays her in the worst way possible.

He’s rich as a king.

Aidan Sterling is one of the richest men in England. He has everything he wants and no one to share it with. After risking his life in the army, he returned to England and made a fortune. Now he keeps his loneliness at bay by focusing on what he’s good at—making money. And then Jenny Tate steps unexpectedly back into his life. He’s never forgotten her and never stopped loving her. Jenny hasn’t forgotten him either, and she hasn’t forgiven him. She’s betrothed to a viscount and has a new life and wants nothing to do with Aidan. But the discovery of an ancient trunk, a hunt for a street urchin, and the interference of homing pigeons might just be enough to bring these two back together.

<

Shana Galen writes an engaging, heartfelt romance for Jenny Tate and Aiden Sterling in From Rags to Kisses. I loved the pairing of street smart Jenny with the business minded Aiden.

I liked that the author chose to divide the novel into two distinct parts. This choice enabled me to understand the close bond that Jenny and Aiden formed while living on the streets of London and how their childhood experiences effected the choices they made as adults. The couples parting at the end of the first part of the novel was perfectly written. I could feel how hurt and angry Jenny was when Aiden decided to leave her to join the army.

Aiden Sterling was part of the covert group headed by Colonel Draven. His special talent was to sneak behind enemy lines to steal food, weapons and horses—skills he learned in the rookeries from Jenny. Draven’s group consisted of men that were considered expendable – they formed a tight knit group. Financial security is import to Aidan --Investments, business and making deals consume Aiden’s time.

Jenny has landed on her feet—she’s engaged to a viscount and is a sought after antiques appraiser. Loved the strong bond between Jenny, Roland and Oscar. Oscar was a delight—he was intuitive and kept me in stiches as he listened for gossip behind closed doors. Jenny found her family with Roland and Oscar.

Aiden and Jenny are gifted with a second chance at love. I rooted for this couple to move past the hurt and to trust each other. Loved the red hot chemistry between the couple—the passion between them was undeniable. Jenny and Aiden matured and grew during the time they were apart. I loved the honest, direct conversations that the couple shared. I felt that it haunted Aiden that he couldn’t find Jenny when he returned home and this endeared him to me. Loved that Jenny was able to find her niche in society and that she was a strong, honest and direct heroine Shana Galen touches upon several different social issues throughout this well paced historical novel. Loved the connections with the Covent Garden Cubs and the Survivor series—perfectly written.

From Rags to Kisses has all the feels— unforgettable characters, heartfelt choices, and an enduring romance!

From Rags to Kisses by Shana Galen

 From Rags to Kisses

by Shana Galen

"Then we have a deal?" He held out his hand
and she stared at it.
"You shake it." he said. She looked at him
sharply, and something changed in her
expression. He saw it soften. Then she put her
hand in his and he squeezed it warmly, hoping
he was right about her. Hoping she didn't rob
him blind and murder him in his sleep. "

What a way to start a love story. Right?
But really, it is a sweet and wonderful love story.
Look at that cover! So beautiful.
Jenny Tate comes from the toughest and roughest
part of town. She has had to learn to protect herself
not just from strangers but her own parents.
So when she meets up with a boy that is so
obviously not from her part of town, she really
isn't sure what to make of him.
Aidan Sterling knows what he is making
of Jenny from the first minute.
But he has no idea what to do about it.

I have enjoyed every story from the
Survivors series. From Rags to Kisses did not
surprise me. I loved it as well. Shana Galen
has created such a wonderful group of friends.
I will say that Aidan might be the strangest
one of the bunch. But he doesn't fail.

Just like all the rest, he is a true survivor.

Susan's Review of Her Royal Payne by Shana Galen--Survivors Series -- 10

He’s a pain...literally.

Rowden Payne, known as The Royal Payne, makes his living in the high stakes world of bareknuckle boxing. The disavowed son of a duke likes the focus boxing requires. It keeps his mind off the tragedies in his past. But just as he’s poised to knock out his biggest rival, he’s mesmerized by a pair of exotic hazel eyes in the crowd. He finds himself flat on his back and short fifty pounds.

She’s a prude with a problem.

Modesty Brown’s father has vanished. Modesty’s only way of finding her is by asking the only man she knows of that class—Rowden Payne. Unfortunately, she’s the one responsible for the Royal Payne losing his crucial fight.

Sometimes the hardest hit is the one to the heart.

Rowden doesn’t want to care for anyone or anything, but if he can just help Modesty find her father, he can be rid of her. Soon the revelation of her father’s secrets and lies puts Modesty, Rowden, and their friends in danger.....

Danger . . .
Adventure . . .
Heartwarming Romances....

Shana Galen combines these story elements perfectly in the latest installment of The Survivor series-Her Royal Payne.

I enjoyed this well-paced, character driven novel. Shana Galen’s descriptive prose transports the reader into the boxing ring with Rowden. I could imagine Rowden dodging punches, evading his opponent and could sense the excitement of the crowd. I loved Rowden – his caring and protective nature appealed to me. The attraction between Rowden and Modesty is apparent from their first meeting and I loved how their feelings deepened. Modesty reaches out to Rowden for help after her Father disappears. Rowden arranges for Modesty to stay with Ewan Mostyn and Lady Lorraine and it was great fun to visit with one of my favorite couples!

Rowden’s manager Chibale Okoro is featured in this novel. Loved the relationship between Rowden and his boxing manager. Rowden trusted Chibale and took his advice on improving his boxing skills without hesitation. The author showed that even though Chibale was confident in giving orders to Rowden, he was hesitant in pursuing his relationship with modiste Therese Renauld. I rooted for this romance and enjoyed every word of their story.

Her Royal Payne has the perfect amount of passion, intrigue and danger. Shana Galen blends two romances with the excitement and danger of the boxing world. I enjoyed reading this novel because the author gave each couple time for their relationship to evolve. Rowden’s soft spot for Trogdon, Modesty’s desire to find her father, Chibale’s love for his family and Therese’s colorful bird Bluette enabled me to relate to each of the main characters. Loved the elements of danger that was threaded throughout the storyline.

I loved the characters and their stories in this fast paced novel and highly reccomend it.

Susan's Review of Sweet Rogue of Mine by Shana Galen--The Survivors Series #9

An outcast who sees too much…A sharpshooter who’s lost his sight…

When a stray pistol ball from the battlefield took Nash’s sight, it also took his entire identity. He’s retreated to his father’s county home to lick his wounds, but his drinking and isolation have only made things worse. When Nash’s father, a powerful earl, threatens to send Nash to an asylum, his former brothers-in-arms call in one of their own to set Nash back on the right course. Nash fears he’s fallen too far and perhaps ending it all is the best solution. Until he encounters a woman in the garden signing a bawdy tune at the top of her lungs.

Prudence Howard has traveled the world with her missionary parents. But after the scandal she caused in Cairo, they’ve foisted her on a vicar in the small town of Milcroft and sailed to the Far East to evangelize without her. Pru doesn’t mean to cause trouble; it’s just that being good is so very hard. When she meets Nash Pope, she’s instantly intrigued. He might be hot-tempered, but he’s handsome and unusual and arouses her interest and passion like no one she’s ever met. He might not know he needs or even wants her help, but Pru has a plan to save him.
Together they glimpse a brighter future.
Nash is bewildered by the unconventional woman who keeps turning up on his doorstep. She tries to teach him night writing, claims a feral peacock is a momentous sign, and makes his toes curl when she kisses him. She refuses to give up on him. But though Nash finds it easy to believe in Pru, can he ever trust himself again?

<

Shana Galen is one of my favorite authors. Her novels are filled with captivating characters, intriguing conflict and sizzling romance. She pairs an unlikely couple – a blind soldier and a missionaries daughter-in Sweet Rogue of Mine resulting in an excellent read!

Nash Pope was a member of the Draven’s Dozen; a group of elite soldiers. As a sharpshooter, he played an important role in covert operations against Napoleon’s army. A piece of shrapnel leaves Nash blind but, more importantly, robs him of his identity and self-worth. Shana Galen writes Nash’s story with honestly and emotion. Nash’s struggle drew me into the story immediately.

Prudence Howard is Fabulous! She’s a free spirit, an intelligent and kind person. Although she’s travelled the world with her missionary parents, her manners, clothing and behavior aren’t accepted by most of residents in the village.

I loved this fast paced novel as it had several supporting sub plots. Rowden travels to Nash’s estate to help him get back on his feet and get the estate and its grounds in shape. As one of the survivors, Rowden understands what Nash experienced during the war. The pieces of Nash’s story unfold during the conversations between the two ex-soldiers and this information is significant to the story. Prudence experiences are important to the story as well. She wants to help Nash by teaching him night writing—a form of Braille. Both Nash and Prudence have scars. Nash’s are visible while Pru’s are emotional—these wounds bond the two characters. I was invested in their friendship, loved how they only believed the best in each other and enjoyed watching their friendship deepen into a romance.

If you are looking for a fast paced novel filled with fabulous characters and a fantastic story-pick up a copy of Sweet Rogue of Mine!

Susan's Review of Kisses and Scandals: A Survivor's Anthology

You’ve met the men of the wildly popular Survivors series. Now meet the charming friends and relatives who walk the streets of London with them. Kisses and Scandal features three exciting novellas set in the Survivors’ world, including one never-before-published story.

Kisses and Scandal

Kisses and Scandals is not your typical Regency romance—it’s so much more! Shana Galen’s novella has interesting characters, a storyline filled with secrets and a romance that sizzles off the pages. Loved the unlikely friends to lovers romance which developed between Lady Philomena and James.

After her London season, Phil knew she wanted to marry for love. Loved that Phil acknowledged to herself that she felt something different when James kissed her. James is a different type of hero. He kept me guessing during the entire story. James was kind and honorable but there was a bit of mystery to him. The secondary story was fabulous. Phil’s mother is determined to arrange a marriage for Phil while the couple is falling in love in front of her!

Shana Galen adds an element of suspense to the novel when James is forced to reveal a secret. This plot twist added a bit of drama to this well- paced novella. Loved that Lady Mayne saved the day for Phil and James—and of course the ending had a few surprises, too!

Counterfeit Scandal
Bridget Lavery met Caleb Harris when they worked together—she was a counterfeiter and he was spy. Caleb was sent on a mission and presumed dead. Bridget married when she realized that she was pregnant with Caleb’s child. She left her son at an orphanage when she was sent to debtors prison and promised him they would be reunited.

I loved this fast paced story. Bridget was determined to find her son and needs Caleb’s help to search for him. Caleb agrees to help Bridget even though it puts him in danger. Loved how the search reunited this couple who learned to trust and love each other again. And the nail biting conclusion—just perfect!

How to Brew a Perfect Kiss

Shana Galen features Thomas Gaines and Raeni Sawyer in a fast paced novella. Loved that Thomas is a successful businessman and owns two coffee shops. Shana Galen blends Thomas’s wish to have his Bond street coffee shop succeed with his desire for Raeni perfectly.
Raeni escaped her family’s plantation because her father was going to sell her. She suspects she is being followed and this puts the couple in danger. The chemistry between the couple sizzles, there is intrigue and an important lesson about the value of freedom.
Loved the connection between the couple-the passion, the understanding and commitment. And the ending—truly romantic—just perfect.

This anthology is related to Shana Galen's Survivor series. I enjoyed reading Lady Philomena's story as she was mentioned in the Claiming of the Shrew. Bridget and Caleb's son Jimmy is one of the orphans in No Earls Allowed--and I am thrilled that Jimmy got his HEA! And Thomas Gaines was one of my favorite characters in An Affair with a Spare.

If you are looking for a book to read during "the isolaton", these novella are a perfect choice. Shana Galen is a gifted and entertaining storyteller- this novel is filled with engaging characters, suspense filled stories and heartwarming romances!

How the Lady Was Won by Shana Galen

How the Lady Was Won
by Shana Galen
★★★★★
Another addition to the Survivors series from
This one is Colins story. He has been known
among the Survivors as the Pretender.
He finds himself in a situation where these
skills work well!
Lady Daphne has been Colins wife for 7 years.
Though she almost didn't even know it.
They had their very forgettable honeymoon night.
And then, Colin was gone.
Now, Daphne knows he is back in town. Even
though she has yet to see anything of him.
They are both fabulous characters to read.
The story is different. Neither Colin or Daphne
have been sleeping around in their separation.
That alone is unusual.
They both have insecurities. Will either of them
admit their feelings? Will Colin be able to accept
that he must let down his guard? Can Daphne
take her rightful place in society? What does
37 bows have to do with anything?
I have found How the Lady Was Won to be
a wonderful story. Great, big feelings.
Very unique characters. I enjoyed it
very much.

Susan's Review of A Duke A Dozen by Shana Galen

They call him the Doomed Duke.
Phineas Duncombe, ninth Duke of Mayne, should not be the duke. After all, he had four—count them—four older brothers! Phin never wanted the dukedom, and the suspicious circumstances of the eighth duke’s death lead Phin to question the Countess of Longstowe. The beautiful widow isn’t at all what Phin expected. He’s intrigued by her and determined to seduce her. The countess is not interested in Phin romantically, but when she comes to him with another request, he can’t deny it. A few days in the country with Lady Longstowe reveal two truths to the new duke. One, he cares for the countess much more than any other woman he’s ever known. Two, Phin either has very bad luck or someone is trying to kill him.

They call her the Wanton Widow.
Annabel was barely eighteen when she was married to the elderly Earl of Longstowe. A harsh, sadistic man, the earl’s death was not something Annabel mourned. Now in her mid-forties, Annabel enjoys her widowhood and has no desire to ever be under a man’s thumb again. Not even a handsome duke like Mayne, who is far too young for her anyway. Annabel’s one desire is to find the daughter who was taken away from her. For that she needs a man with power and status. She needs the Duke of Mayne. When the two are thrust together, Annabel struggles to fight her attraction to the charming Phin. She’s losing the battle. But can she ever trust another man, especially with the one part of herself she’s never given away—her heart?

I loved the pairing of Phineas Duncombe, the ninth Duke of Mayne and Lady Annabel Longstowe; it’s a fabulous twist on the May-December romance! Annabel is 15 years older than Phin and her reputation as The Wanton Widow is the talk of the town. Loved the scene when Phin asks Annabel about the nature of her relationship with his late brother. This conversation between the characters sets the tone for the novel. A jealous Phin tries to determine if his brother and Annabel were lovers. Loved that Annabel remained cool, calm and collected and then challenged Phin as to the real reason for their meeting!

Annabel has a secret and she needs a powerful ally to help her. She knows that Phin is sexually attracted to her. Annabel uses this knowledge to her advantage when she asks him to help her locate her daughter. Loved that Phin struggled with his attraction towards Annabel when she started to disrobe-he was very, very distracted- but, agreed to help Annabel. I loved the sexual chemistry between Phin and Annabel and that he truly wanted to help her.

Annabel and Phin begin their adventure by travelling to Ceald House. Annabel believes that her late husband’s papers may hold clues to her daughter’s whereabouts. Loved that the author employed a double romance-Annabel and Phin and Meg and Reynolds. This choice added so much to my enjoyment of the novel! Loved that Phin cared for Annabel and that she began to trust him during their adventure while their servants were falling in love below stairs!

A Duke A Dozen is a fabulous story – the characters are relatable and their journey is poignant. The author weaves in lots of social commentary and a bit of intrigue. Shana Galen has a gift for writing smart, witty conversations infused with humor for her characters; the conversations between Phin and Annabel are marvelous. The conclusion to the novel is superbly written and I loved the ending which surprised me!

Susan's review of The Claiming of the Shrew by Shana Galen

What happens when a marriage of convenience isn't so convenient?

Lieutenant Colonel Benedict Draven has retired from the army and spends most of his days either consulting for the Foreign Office or whiling away the hours at his club with his former comrades-in-arms. He rarely thinks about the fiery Portuguese woman he saved from an abusive marriage by wedding her himself. It was supposed to be a marriage in name only, but even five years later and a world away, he can't seem to forget her.

Catarina Neves never forgot what it felt like to be scared, desperate, and subject to the whims of her cruel father. Thanks to a marriage of convenience and her incredible skill as a lacemaker, she's become an independent and wealthy woman. But when she's once again thrust into a dangerous situation, she finds herself in London and knocking on the door of the husband she hasn't seen since those war-torn years in Portugal. Catarina tells Benedict she wants an annulment, but when he argues against it, can she trust him enough to ask for what she really needs?

“What I want-no, no-what I need,” she said coolly, is a husband.”

After reading this sentence, I knew I was going to adore Benedict Draven and Caterina Neves story. While serving in the army in Portugal, Draven marries Caterina to save her from an arranged marriage. After the service, they share a passionate kiss and Draven leaves Caterina at her aunt’s home and rejoins his men.

Draven is surprised when Caterina appears in London and requests an annulment. Shana Galen writes strong heroines—and the passionate, talented Caterina is one of her best. In five years, Caterina has become a successful business woman. Caterina lace with its intricate patterns and soft thread is famous throughout Europe. Draven senses that Catarina isn’t telling him why she wants the annulment and he avoids giving her an answer. I loved how this couple fell in love. The sparks between Draven and Caterina were even stronger now than when they first met. Loved that the author paired an older hero with a younger heroine. Draven referred to himself as older and Caterina countered back each time by telling him he was strong and virile. Pairing the strong willed, independent Caterina with the honorable, calm Lt. Colonel Draven worked. Their journey from friends to lovers was perfectly written and lovely to read.

Enjoyed that several of Draven’s dozen appeared in the novel and loved Ines and Tigrino. There was conflict, a villain and danger—just enough to make the story interesting. Loved that the author focused on the romance in this story. Both Caterina and Draven deserved their HEA-and it was so enjoyable to read their journey.

Kudos to Shana Galen for writing a fabulous story for Draven! The Claiming of the Shrew is the perfect weekend read—once you read the first page you will be captivated by Ms. Galen’s characters and the their story. Am looking forward to the next book in this series!

Susan's Review of Unmask Me If You Can by Shana Galen

This masked lord... Lord Jasper, younger son of a duke, suffered horrible burns fighting in the Napoleonic Wars. He wears a mask to hide his face from the stares and screams and finds comfort in the shadows. Jasper is an exceptional bounty hunter, so when a woman summons him to her deathbed and asks him to find her runaway daughter before she passes away, he doesn't refuse. Jasper is close to his quarry when he's knifed by an assailant. Imagine his surprise when he regains consciousness in the arms of the woman he seeks. Except she's not at all what he expected.

Is not the only one with scars. On a remote cliff on the sea, Olivia Carlisle calls her five-year-old son in from an approaching storm. But the little boy is more interested in the man he's found on the trail to their hidden cottage. Olivia fears men and wants nothing more than to leave the injured man where she found him. But his knife wound is severe, and with the approaching storm, she knows leaving him will condemn him to death. As Jasper begins to heal, Olivia acknowledges her attraction to him, even though such emotions terrify her almost as much as returning to London. Jasper must convince her that her only chance at safety is to challenge the man who pursues her. They must travel into the lion's den—he to face his vulnerability and she to face her worst fears.

Unmask Me If You Can is my favorite book in Shana Galen’s Survivor series. It’s an emotional story filled with fabulously written characters, great dialogue, romance and intrigue.

Jasper Grantham was a member of Draven’s dozen, an elite group of men who fought in the Peninsular War. Draven’s troop was given the most dangerous assignments. Jasper was badly burned when he ran back into a burning building to save a member of his troop. He wears a mask to cover the burns. Olivia Carlisle was betrothed to the powerful, violent Duke of Withernsea. Olivia disappeared from her home and society before they were married. Lord Carlisle has hired Jasper to find Olivia because her mother is dying.

Olivia’s son finds an injured Jasper on the path leading to their remote cottage. The couple forms a tenuous bond during a three- day rainstorm. They are attracted to each other but each has a lot of issues to overcome. Shana Galen made an excellent plot choice when she compared Jasper’s visible wounds versus Olivia’s emotional wounds throughout the novel. This decision drew me into the characters and their story and made for an excellent read.

The romance between Jasper and Olivia is fabulously written. Loved that Jasper understood that he could be loved for himself; a loyal, brave loving man. He realizes that his scars don’t define him. They are invisible to those who love him. Olivia learns to trust Jasper and is able to overcome her own fears. Loved the honest dialogue between the couple. Olivia is a survivor but, she falls back into the complacent daughter role when she returns home until Withersea shows his true colors. The last few chapters are suspenseful and kept me guessing. Loved the intrigue threaded throughout the novel and the unmasking of the villains in the story.

Unmask Me If You Can has all the feels—great characters, sizzling romance and suspenseful plot.

And the teaser about Draven was perfectly executed—I can’t wait for the next book in Shana Galen’s Survivor Series!

Susan's Review of An Affair with a Spare by Shana Galen

He's turned seduction into an art form...
Rafe Beaumont, fifth son of an earl, uses his irresistible charm with the ladies to glean dangerous war secrets. Now he's putting those skills to the ultimate test: capturing an elusive assassin by seducing his daughter. The problem? She's entirely immune to Rafe's flattery.

Never before has Collette Fortier met a man as attractive as Rafe. But her father's life is at stake, and succumbing to Rafe would be disastrous. But when Rafe turns the tables on her, offering support and friendship instead of a fleeting affair, Collette finds herself tempted in ways she never could have imagined..

Rafe Beaumont is a war hero and a member of an elite group of military men who fought in the Peninsular War. The team was comprised of second and third sons of the nobility. These men were viewed as expendable and were given the most dangerous assignments; except for Rafe.

He used his good looks and sexual charms to get information from the wives and daughters of Napoleon’s generals and advisers. He’d snuck out a few bedroom windows during the war but, he’d never had a challenging assignment. Rafe is thrilled when his former commander, Lt. Colonel Draven, approaches him with a mission. His assignment? To charm information from Collette Fortier; the daughter of one of Napoleon’s assassins.

Shana Galen’s descriptive writing style adds so much to the romance between Rafe and Collette. Ms. Galen deftly provides insight into both characters during the suspense filled novel. I loved it when Rafe was exasperated by Collette. I could imagine his frustration as he’d been introduced to Collette several times. Instead of pursuing him; she is so flustered by Rafe that she starts talking to him about the mating habits of hedgehogs! Loved the honest, poignant dialogue between the couple. Through their conversations, Rafe learns about Collette’s childhood and he begins to understand her fierce loyalty to her father.

One of my favorite scenes is when Rafe and Collette hide in an empty stable to avoid a confrontation with the neighborhood watchman. Rafe admits that he cares for Collette and she admits that she may love him. Rafe is faced with a life changing decision. Could he help Collette and her father escape and commit treason? Or did he love her enough to let her go?

Shana Galen weaves a complex story in Affair With A Spare. The perfectly executed spy vs spy plot, the characters and the smart dialogue drew me into the story. Rafe and Collette’s dangerous journey kept me turning the pages. I enjoyed that both Rafe and Collette were strong complex characters—both were resilient than they appeared to be. The secondary characters of Thomas Gaines and Lady Haddington were superbly written. Shana Galen is known for her perfectly executed conclusions and Affair With A Spare does not disappoint. The ending is full of emotion, suspense and has a few surprises!

Read more at : No Earls Allowed

A rain storm has awakened Lady Juliana and she finds her unwanted protector, Neil Wraxall, awake and keeping watch over the orphanage.

“Perhaps I should keep you company. How am I to sleep when you sit up and keep watch?”

He blew out a breath and raked his hands through his hair, pausing to hold his head in his hands and shake it. “Why can’t you be one of those biddable females? Why don’t you do as you’re told or, better yet, stay in your room?” He looked up at her. “You shouldn’t be in here with me, alone, and in only your night clothes. Aren’t you concerned about propriety and your reputation and all the other rot you females hold so high?”

“Why can’t you be one of those charming gentlemen who allows a lady to help him so she can return to her room and observe propriety?”

“Because I’m not!” He stood and stalked toward her. “I’m a soldier, and I’ll always be a soldier. I don’t need help or company. I will do my duty until you come to your senses and return home.”
But he knew as well as she that she could not return home. Perhaps he felt the same anguish she did, the same tearing of loyalties. He loomed over her, and though she refused to step back and show her trepidation, she did lower her voice. “I thought you sold your commission. You are no longer a soldier. Is it possible you are here because you want to be here, not out of duty? Perhaps you are coming to care for the children too.”

He laughed, a bitter laugh that made her shiver. “If you mean do I pity them, you have it correct. I pity them and every bastard ever born.”

She stiffened. Why must he behave this way? Why could he not see that the circumstances of his birth did not define him? “Then go home. I don’t want your misplaced sense of honor.”
His fists clenched and his jaw tightened. If he’d been another man, she might have been frightened, but she knew he would never hurt her. “I will not leave you until you do,” he said through clenched teeth
.
    “Then at least sleep.”

    “Go back to bed.”

    “Why won’t you sleep?”

“Good God, woman! You are every bit as stubborn as they say.”

She put her hands on her hips. “I prefer the term ‘persistent.’” She bit her lip. “Is it Slag? Is that why you won’t sleep? You think he will come here tonight?”

He closed his eyes as though in surrender. “No.” His voice sounded weary and ragged. “No. It’s not Slag or the rain or a sense of duty. It’s here.” He tapped on his head. “Here is where the problem lies. You see, my brainbox remains firmly entrenched in battle, and I’d rather not wake the whole building with my shouts and screams. Is that answer enough for you?” He turned his back on her, staring into the fire.

Julia pressed her hands over her mouth. “Oh, Mr. Wraxall.” She reached for him—to do what she was not certain—but he moved out of her reach.

“I don’t want your pity.” One hand went to the back of his neck. “God, but I need a drink. I’m too damn sober, and everything is too damn sharp and clear.”

“I might have some wine in the kitchen—”

He held his hand up to stay her flight. “If I want a drink, I can procure it myself. If I can’t go a few days without a bottle of Blue Ruin, then I’m a sadder case than even Rafe makes me out to be.”

    “Who is Rafe?”

He turned to look at her, seeming almost surprised she was still in the room. “Go to bed, Lady Juliana, before I say or do something else I regret.”

“You’ve done nothing to regret, Mr. Wraxall. I am glad you confided in me. If you have nightmares, why not try some warm milk ? My governess used to—”

The look he gave her made her close her mouth. “Do you think these are the stuff warm milk will cure? These aren’t mere whimsy. I relive battles and ambushes and slaughter in my dreams. My mind doesn’t conjure these horrors. The blood and the carnage were quite real.”

“And you wake screaming?” she asked, her voice barely more than a whisper.

     “I’m not the ideal houseguest.”

“Certainly you don’t have these dreams every night.”

“No, but I’d rather not risk it tonight.”

Julia stepped back, startled at his abrupt answer. “Why—”

“Go to bed, my lady.” He turned his back on her, and she almost marched out of the room and back to her own chamber. Let him stay awake all night. He deserved his exhaustion if this was how he showed gratitude. But she didn’t leave. Her feet stood rooted in place, her hands clenched tightly at her sides.

“Of course you won’t go,” he said. “I should have had more success if I asked you to stay.” He glanced at her over his shoulder. She lifted her chin, refusing to back down.

“If you don’t want to sleep, that is fine, but I will stay and keep you company. It’s the least I can do when—” She broke off.

He rounded on her. “When I am the only thing keeping Slag from coming in here and doing whatever the hell he likes to you?”

“I don’t want to talk about him tonight.”

“We are both speaking of things we would rather not, it seems.” He stalked toward her, forcing her to back up until she was flush against the wall beside the door. “But understand this. I will never allow Slag to touch you. Never. I will do whatever is necessary to protect you from him, from your soft heart, and even from me.”

“You?” she breathed. She could barely say the words. Her heart pounded and her lungs struggled to take in air. He was so close, his eyes so blue, his body so large and so warm and so close.

“Yes, me. At the moment, I have a tenuous hold on my control at best. Leave before I do something we will both regret. The very thing we both wanted in the carriage.”

“What is that?” she asked, her breath catching in her throat.

His eyes blazed, and she realized she had challenged him yet again. Before she could take the words back or even flee the room, Wraxall put both hands on the wall behind her, effectively pinning her in. Taking another step closer, his body pressed against hers with a delicious warmth that made her realize exactly how cold she’d been before he’d touched her.

“I have wanted to kiss you since the first time I saw you.” His finger traced her cheek. “You had flour here.” He trailed to her chin, the pad of his finger burning a path along her skin. “Porridge here.” He looked down, his finger flitting down her neck with a slowness that made her tremble. “And your dress…”

Julia closed her eyes. She was so warm that if he touched her body, she feared she might spark and flare like a newly lit candle. But his hand stopped at the vee of her robe.

“I looked a mess,” she whispered.

    “You looked irresistible.”

Major Neil Wraxall’s life is turned upside down when his father asks him for a favor. Neil has been tasked with what seems like an easy mission; his father has asked him to persuade Lady Juliana St Maur to return home. The Earl of St Maur is tired of his daughter spending time at St Dismas orphanage and has decided that she should marry. Neil realizes that Lady Juliana is overwhelmed when he walks into the orphanage; he smells burning bread, sees that the oatmeal has boiled over on the stove, notices three rats are running around the kitchen and notices Julia’s ball gown is splattered with flour and oatmeal. The cook has quit and twelve hungry boys need their breakfast. Neil realizes that this rescue mission is not going to be as easy as he thought.

The chemistry between Neil and Julia was apparent in the first chapter of the book. Neil takes a military approach to the orphanage. He notices that the doors and windows don’t lock properly, the roof leaks and the kitchen and bedrooms are a mess. He decides that the boys need structure and soon has them cleaning the kitchen and their rooms. But, that approach doesn’t work so well with Lady Juliana! Juliana is clearly out of her element but, she is determined to stay at the orphanage with the boys. Loved how the couple’s romance progressed and that they worked together to keep the boys home.

I enjoyed that Shana Galen chose to make No Earls Allowed a character driven romance. This choice changed the book from a good to an excellent read. Her descriptive prose enables her to weave in social commentary throughout the storyline. There is a dark undertone present in the plot but, the novel’s focus is positive. The fabulous characters and the dialogue and the well -paced plot drew me in to the novel. The secondary characters added warmth and depth to the story line. The characters and the witty dialogue reminded me of Ms. Galen’s Jewels of the Ton series which I adored. The novel’s conclusion was perfectly written as Ms. Galen balances the elements of suspense, trust and romance in the last few chapters.

No Earls Allowed features a romance between an unlikely pair; a former military hero with a complicated past and a stubborn heiress—their journey towards happiness makes for a delightful read with all the feels!
