Susan's Review of Mary Balogh's Someone to Trust

During a rare white Christmas at Brambledean Court, the widow Elizabeth, Lady Overfield, defies convention by falling in love with a younger man in the latest novel in the Westcott series.
After her husband's passing, Elizabeth Overfield decides that she must enter into another suitable marriage. That, however, is the last thing on her mind when she meets Colin Handrich, Lord Hodges, at the Westcott Christmas house party. She simply enjoys his company as they listen to carolers on Christmas Eve, walk home from church together on Christmas morning, and engage in a spirited snowball fight in the afternoon. Both are surprised when their sled topples them into a snowbank and they end up sharing an unexpected kiss. They know there is no question of any relationship between them, for she is nine years older than he.
They return to London the following Season, both committed to finding other, more suitable matches. Still they agree to share one waltz at each ball they attend. This innocuous agreement proves to be one that will topple their worlds, as each dance steadily ensnares them in a romance that forces the two to question what they are willing to sacrifice for love. .

I am loving Mary Balogh’s Westcott series. The characters, their relationships and the settings intrigue me. I finished Someone to Care and was thrilled that Someone to Trust took place at Brambledean Court immediately after Viola and Marcel’s Christmas Eve wedding. Loved the holiday setting, the houseful of relatives and the Westcott family’s Christmas celebrations. Elizabeth and Colin’s love story is beautifully written. The couple enjoys each other’s company and they form a close friendship during the holiday festivities at Brambledean. Elizabeth is attracted to the handsome, charming Colin but more importantly is at ease with him. Colin admires Elizabeth’s beauty but appreciates her calm and giving personality. The couple spend Christmas day outside enjoying the snow. Their sled tips over, lands in a snowbank and Colin kisses Elizabeth. The kiss and the sexual attraction between the couple changes the course of their friendship.

Elizabeth was a widow and nine years older than Colin and polite society frowned upon a marriage of an older woman to a younger man. It just wasn’t done – and the couple decides to remain friends. I loved that the author incorporated the waltz into the storyline. Colin and Elizabeth share a very romantic waltz at Brambledean and agree to share the first waltz at every function they attend.

Elizabeth’s story unfolds with each chapter. I admired her strength of character; she has endured heartache and loneliness and kept her experiences to herself. She accepts Sir Geoffrey Codaire’s proposal and this changes the course of the novel as his jealous, petty character is revealed. Elizabeth fears she can’t trust anyone and breaks her bethrothal and in doing so causes a huge scandal. Loved that Elizabeth’s family and Colin supported her during this time.

There were three anti-heroes in this novel and the author wove each one of them into the story perfectly. The most obvious villian is the veiled, creepy Lady Hodges—and I was thrilled that Elizabeth stood up to her. Elizabeth’s relationships with her first husband Desmond Overfield and Geoffrey Codaire speak to the social expectations of the time. A wife was her husband’s possession. I was surprised that Elizabeth suffered during her marriage and it was accepted.

Colin and Elizabeth's romance has all the feels; it's romantic, emotional and sensuous --think dancing the waltz! The ending was a pleasure to read-it contained several amusing surprises! Elizabeth’s decision to ignore society’s expectations of her and choose love was inspiring. Colin’s faith in their relationship and love for Elizabeth was the heart of their romance—he believed in them. He followed his heart’s desire.

Slightly Dangerous by Mary Balogh

Slightly Dangerous
by Mary Balogh
☆☆☆☆☆

I wish I could give the Bedwyn Slightly series
a hundred stars. It is one of the only series I
have read and reread over and over.
I never fail to fall in love with this family and
the entire series again.
When it comes here to this last one, it is the
story of Wulfric. Duke of Bewcastle. You have
gotten to know him very well through the
stories. He is an important part of the lives
of everyone. Everyone. As most that dont
know him, even some that slightly know him
think he is heartless and cruel.

"And infatuated be damned. He was near to
being blinded by his attraction to her. He
was in love, damn it all. He disliked her,
he resented her, he disapproved of almost
everything about her, yet he was head over
ears in love with her, like a foolish
schoolboy."

There have been clues throughout the series
as to exactly what is inside the Duke of Bewcastle.
All the clues fall into place. Here in the final story.
I am always surprised at just how
much I fall in love with Wulfric.
Again.
This is the only series I always recommend
to anyone that loves to read historical romance.
I have purchased these books myself

Slightly Tempted by Mary Balogh

Slightly Tempted
by Mary Balogh
☆☆☆☆☆

Slightly Tempted is Book Four of
The Bedwyn Saga series.

This is Morgans story. Morgan is the youngest of the
Bedwyn siblings. The prettiest. The only one without the
Bedwyn nose. She is no less determined, smart and strong
than any of the other siblings. She is just 18 years old and
therefore coming into her own. Morgan finds herself near
the war at the beginning. Through a series of circumstances,
she is helping care for the wounded. Her brother, Alleyne, is
involved with the events as well. When Morgan has the
opportunity to leave, she chooses not to. The wounded need
her and Alleyne has gone missing.

Morgan met Earl of Rosthorn, Gervase Ashford. They have
developed a bond and friendship over the time. He has been
looking for information about Alleyne. And trying to comfort
Morgan.

What she doesn't know is that there is a long standing battle
between Gervase and the Duke of Bewcastle, Wulfric.
Morgans big brother. When Gervase has found out who Morgan
is, he decides to exact revenge against Bewcastle through Morgan.

As time goes on and they get to know each other, they fall
in love. But Gervase has his secret. The reason he met Morgan
to begin with. He is realizing the strength of his love for her is
growing deeper. Must he tell her his secret? Will she be
able to forgive him? And what about Bewcastle? Will they ever
be able to call a truce?

Slightly Tempted is another wonderful story in the Bedwyn Saga.
Much of the emotion comes from the time of war. Mary Balogh
has written a story full of detail to make you feel what is
happening.  It's easy to imagine the chaos brought
from the crisis all around. Even the upper classes find all the
money in the world cannot make it easy for them.

The romance between Morgan and Gervase is fraught with upset
and uncertainty. Can they make it through? Will their relationship
be strong enough to survive war and the Bedwyn family?

If you are one of those people that sneak and read the end of the
book first, I recommend that you abstain from doing that this
time!! It has a marvelous ending to top off the terrific story.
And to keep the series rolling on....

I have long had my own copy of Slightly Tempted.

Slightly Wicked by Mary Balogh

Slightly Wicked

Book Two of the
Bedwyn Saga

This series is a long held favorite of mine. I have
reread it many times. But I have never written a
review before. Slightly Wicked is my favorite of
the series. Though, I love them all.
This one is Rannulfs story. He is carefree and happy,
making the trip to visit his Grandmother.
How the smallest choices and chances can change
your life so dramatically....
He meets Claire Campbell along the way.
She is a confident, talented and beautiful actress.
Rannulf and Claire find themselves stuck in a hotel
due to bad weather and a broken axel.
What is there to do?? Two single, worldly and
slightly wicked adults find ways to fill the time.
The weather clears and it's time for everyones
journey to continue. Claire leaves without so much as
a ''see you later". Rannulf decides she must have had
her reasons for leaving that way.
As you might have guessed, Rannulf and Claire do
meet up again. But neither of them is prepared
when it happens.
The Bedwyn family is the star of this series.
The whole family. They are each very different
individuals. And yet, they are a very close family.
I am sure each story can stand alone. Though
I have never read them as such.
Each is a wonderful story and I hope you
will enjoy the Bedwyn Saga.

My copy of this story has been signed
by the amazing Mary Balogh.
As such, it is a great treasure of mine.

Slightly Scandalous by Mary Balogh

Slightly Scandalous
by Mary Balogh
 ☆☆☆☆☆

Book Three of the Bedwyn Saga

Have you ever heard the saying,
"I mean to start as I will go on."
That is exactly how this story begins.
Freyja's story starts with her bold and brave
personality. She immediately meets up with
Joshua Moore, Marquess of Hallmere.
The two of them are more than slightly scandalous
Freyja has no idea who he is or about his title.
Same as he does not believe that she could
possibly be the sister of the Duke of Bewcastle.

When two very stubborn people meet up,
this is what happens.
Freyja and Joshua each come with their own
baggage and uncertainties. They also come with
tough outer shells.

Are either of them brave enough to admit what
they want? Either strong enough to hang on as
the other breaks down their own guard?
If they both can find a way to get through,
they could find a wonderful future waiting
on the other side. But it will take courage
and vulnerability from each of them.

It takes an amazing writer to tell this story.
And to find the perfect match for Freyja.
Mary Balogh must have dug deep to pull
this book together.

I have owned this book for years.

Slightly Married by Mary Balogh

Slightly Married
by Mary Balogh

Book One of the Bedwyn Saga
Aidans Story
5 Stars
★★★★★
Lord Aidan Bedwyn was raised in a loving family.
With siblings galore. While it was an active wonderful
childhood, they were also taught honor, loyalty and
to do your duty. So when one of Colonel Bedwyns
soldiers makes a request on his death bed, Aidan knows
he must follow through with it.
The death bed request takes him to Ringwood Manor.
The home of Eve Morris. When Aidan arrives, he finds
her with a family she has created for herself.
Including children, a dog and a group of people that
he calls her lame ducks.
Mary Balogh writes a story in which
the romance grows slowly. You will meet and
get to know the rest of the Bedwyn family.
I fell in love with the flow of the story.
Eve is no silly country miss. She is capable and
determined. So she does not make it easy on
Colonel Aidan Bedwyn. But then, he does nothing
the easy way himself. What exactly does it mean
It's a true love story. With a long happy ending.
And I can't wait to get onto the next one.
I bought my copy of this story a long time ago.

Christmas Miracles by Mary Balogh

Christmas Miracles
by Mary Balogh

Christmas Miracles is a lovely book filled with
three short romantic stories staged during the
Christmas season.

Wassail Bowl
It was one big misunderstanding.
Haven't we all noticed how a misunderstanding
can grow so fast and before you know it, it seems
beyond repair? Not with a bit of a Christmas miracle.

The Bond Street Carolers
Two very stubborn adults. They would never have
even met if it weren't for the voice of a young boy.
When they both must compromise a little, they
discover a bit of a Christmas miracle for themselves.

Guarded by Angels
Do you believe in guardian angels?? I think most
of us have had something happen that makes us
wonder. This story is about just such an event.
It brings two people back together after a long
separation. In they end, they can only try
to thank their pair of angels.

I bought my kindle copy from Amazon.

Once Upon a Dream by Mary Balogh/ Grace Burrowes

Once Upon A Dream
by Mary Balogh & Grace Burrowes

This is a two story book. The first story is
Another Dream by Mary Balogh.
Eleanors sister, Christine is married to the
Duke of Bewcastle. Christine is throwing a party
to celebrate his 40th birthday. So Eleanor is coming.
After all, Wulfric has always been kind and generous
with her. On the trip, a storm stops all travel.
Eleanor meets a young girl also waiting out the
storm at the inn. Georgette is the daughter of the
Earl of Staunton, Michael Benning.
Sometimes, being caught in a storm can
change a whole life. And Georgette is certain
she knows just how the lives should be changing.
Georgette, her brothers hand still clasped in
her own, paused at the top of the stairs before
proceeding to the room where their
nurse would be awaiting them. "Well?" she
asked him in an urgent whisper. "What did
you think?"
"You really believe she is the one,
Georgie?" he asked.
"Oh, I do, she said with passionate
conviction. "I really, really do, Robbie. Did you
notice her eyes? They seem to smile all the time."

The second story in this book is
The Duke of my Dreams by Grace Burrowes
Anne Faraday is wealthy but not titled.
Elias is the Duke of Sedgemere.
Elias has a nursery full of sons. He feels they
are in need of a mother. But he cant quite
admit that he is in need of a wife.

"I don't know her well, but I like her very much,"
Sedgemere said. "She hates me, you see. Has no marital
aspirations in my direction whatsoever. For that alone,
she enjoys my most sincere esteem."

Fate brings them together enough that
Elias can only accept that Anne is the woman
for him. Especially when he sees how she is
with the boys.

This book is written by two
amazing romance writers. And even though
the tales are rather short, there is a lot of story
in them. They are full of romance and fun.
It's not often that you get to catch up with
old family friends or hear about a duck orgy.
I am a fan of both authors and highly
recommend this book.
I bought this ebook from Amazon.
